thursday, october 21 -
after genetics, i made my way over to aileen's to get ready for the hype machine party. we ended up having to wait on line for about half an hour only to get relegated to the basement portion of the backstage bar. elated that each of us had been given a "free shot" ticket, we quickly scurried to the bar. as i requested my whiskey shot, the bartender told me that the voucher was specific for some drink called harlem. mike, aileen and i had never tried it before, so we took the shots like champs. let me tell you, harlem is like a sugary version of jaegermeister. i didn't think drinks could taste any worse than jaegermeister. after shaking off the grossness, we patiently waited until the bouncers gave us permission to go to the main floor. aileen and i subtly checked out all the hipster bearded hunks. about twenty minutes later, we noticed the bouncers weren't guarding the doors that granted us access to the main stage, so we ran up the steps to the main floor, where we encountered ark, who gave us beer. we danced a bit as kisses (indie pop band from california) set up and also (longingly) peered up at floor above us, the "vip section," which had open bar. le sigh. anyway, kisses' performance was pretty good despite the fact that not many people danced. we caught diamondsnake next. i would have probably dismissed them if i came across their music online, but i must say, their get up and performance was super entertaining. midway into diamondsnake's set, however, we decided to head over to public assembly in williamsburg to meet up with some of mike's friends. unfortunately, we got there too late for the live music, but aileen and i made our own little dance party happen.

friday, october 22 -
mike and i headed to williamsburg at around one pm to catch brooklynvegan's free day show at public assembly. there, we met up with vaughn and jeremy, who informed us the open bar included free magic hat no. 9 beer and bourbon sweet teas. the latter was absolutely delicious and i insist you try it at some point in your life (recipe: 1/3 bourbon, 2/3 sweet tea, splash of soda water). besides the great free booze, a bunch of bands were playing amongst two stages. we checked out ty segall (mike bought their vinyl straight out of the hand of ty segall!), oberhofer and devtochka. the rest of the night was spent at sly fox in celebration of ryan's 21st birthday. bilal was enamored by a sixty-something year old half japanese, half polish psychic named alexandra.
